Westmount–Ville-Marie

Westmount–Ville-Marie is a thriving cosmopolitan riding in the heart of Greater Montreal.

During my interactions with the residents, two things have been made clear to me: they expect me to

Westmount—Ville-Marie

Westmount—Ville-Marie

keep them well informed about what is going on at the federal level and the issues concerning them span a broad range of topics.

One such issue is city infrastructure, which is also an important issue for the Liberal Party of Canada. The Liberals recognize the importance of working closely with the provincial and municipal levels of government to ensure modern infrastructure that will improve our quality of life and attract capital and new enterprises to Westmount—Ville-Marie.

The riding is home to a number of educational and research institutions including two major universities, McGill and Concordia. The federal government plays a substantial role in funding research in the social sciences, the life sciences, natural sciences and engineering through various federal programs.

Westmount—Ville-Marie has a rich cultural heritage and is home to performing arts and to a number of museums, monuments and historic sites. These are invaluable to the riding, making tremendous contributions to its quality of life and therefore residents want to ensure the preservation and growth of these cultural assets.

Residents are also concerned with issues extend beyond the riding, such as:

1. Climate change resulting from global warming and what the federal government plans to do about it;

2. Eradicating child poverty and providing support for senior citizens and those without shelter;

3. Canada’s foreign policy position regarding issues such as the war in Afghanistan;

4. Canada’s immigration policy in the face of aging demographics;

5. The need for a coherent policy on science, technology and innovation in order to make us more globally competitive; and,

6. The direction of our economy in the face of globalization.

Since my nomination as the Liberal candidate in Westmount–Ville-Marie, I have not stopped going through the riding in order to personally meet the residents and listen to their concerns and priorities for both the riding and the country. It is my intention to continue listening to them and to keep them well informed on what the Liberal Party of Canada intends to do to address their hopes and their concerns.
